Many people are curious about Freemasonry but are unsure how someone actually becomes a member. The process is straightforward and begins with a simple step: asking.
Unlike many organizations, Freemasonry does not recruit members. Instead, a man must express his own interest in joining. This tradition reflects the belief that membership should come from a genuine desire for personal growth, fellowship, and service.
Basic Requirements
While exact requirements can vary slightly by jurisdiction, most lodges follow similar guidelines. In general, a man seeking membership must:
- Be of good moral character
- Believe in a Supreme Being
- Be of lawful age (typically 18 or 21 depending on the jurisdiction)
- Join of his own free will without outside pressure
Freemasonry welcomes men from all backgrounds, professions, and walks of life.
Meeting the Lodge
The first step is usually to contact a local lodge or speak with a Mason. Many lodges invite interested individuals to visit, attend social events, or meet members before beginning the application process.
This allows both the prospective member and the lodge to get to know each other.
The Petition Process
If someone decides to move forward, he submits a petition for membership. Members of the lodge will then meet with the candidate to answer questions and ensure he understands the values and responsibilities of Freemasonry.
After this process, the lodge votes on the petition.
The Degrees of Freemasonry
If accepted, the candidate begins the journey of Freemasonry by receiving the three traditional degrees:
- Entered Apprentice
- Fellow Craft
- Master Mason
These degrees introduce the lessons, traditions, and symbolism that have been part of Freemasonry for centuries.
A Commitment to Growth
Joining Freemasonry is not simply about belonging to an organization. It is about committing to a lifelong path of self-improvement, friendship, and service to others.
Many men find that the friendships they build and the lessons they learn within the lodge stay with them throughout their lives.
