Understanding One of the World’s Oldest Fraternities
Freemasonry is one of the oldest fraternal organizations in the world. For centuries, men from many walks of life have joined the fraternity to pursue personal improvement, strengthen their communities, and build lasting friendships.
While Freemasonry has traditions and symbols that date back hundreds of years, its purpose remains simple: to make good men better.
A Brotherhood of Character
Freemasonry brings together men who share a commitment to moral values, integrity, and mutual support. Members come from many different professions, religions, and backgrounds, but they meet as equals within the lodge.
Through fellowship, shared experiences, and the traditions of the fraternity, Freemasons encourage one another to grow as individuals and as members of their communities.

The Lessons of Freemasonry
Freemasonry teaches its principles through symbolism and tradition. Many of the symbols used by the fraternity originate from the tools of medieval stonemasons, which are used as metaphors for building character and living an honorable life.
These lessons focus on timeless virtues such as:
- Integrity
- Charity
- Respect for others
- Personal responsibility
- Service to the community
Rather than teaching specific doctrines, Freemasonry encourages each member to reflect on these lessons and apply them in his own life.
The Lodge
The local lodge is the heart of Freemasonry. It is where members gather to conduct lodge business, welcome new members, share fellowship, and participate in charitable efforts.
Each lodge is part of a larger Masonic jurisdiction governed by a Grand Lodge. In Michigan, lodges operate under the authority of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Michigan.

Freemasonry and the Community
Freemasons have long supported charitable causes and community organizations. Across the country, lodges participate in programs that support education, healthcare, and relief efforts.
Many Masonic organizations also sponsor major charitable initiatives, including hospitals, scholarships, and educational programs.
